Chasuble

Damask: Early 17th century, Orphrey: Mid- 17th century
Artist/maker unknown, Spanish
The complex design on the orphrey (decorative band) of this chasuble—a sleeveless garment worn by priests during Mass—was formed by adding colored fabric to the red silk ground and embroidering it into place. This embroidery technique, called appliqué, was popular during the seventeenth century, especially in Spain and Italy.
