Votive Shrine

9th - 10th century
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
Models of the Mahabodhi temple at Bodhgaya were made in various parts of South and Southeast Asia as offerings to gain religious merit. This model is not an exact copy of the temple but presents important elements of the original to evoke both the sacred site and the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment.
