Small fans called lilliputiens or imperceptibles were popular in the Neoclassical period. This example is decorated with a mythological scene of Orpheus and Eurydice. The background and limbs are painted on sheer silk and heavily embellished with sequins; the faces, carefully placed between folds, are made of thin slivers of painted ivory.
