Hot Water Urn

1763
Made by Partnership of Thomas Whipham II and Charles Wright, London (1757–1775)
This hot water urn is one of four surviving pieces from an ornate tea and coffee service presented to Elizabeth Lloyd Cadwalader by her parents, Colonel Edward Lloyd III and Anne Rousby Lloyd. The service was part of a large dowry gift on the occasion of Elizabeth's marriage to Philadelphia merchant John Cadwalader in 1768.

The coats of arms engraved on each vessel are those of the Lloyd family: Lloyd impaling Rousby. The Rococo-style decoration---consisting of spiral fluting and asymmetrical floral, foliate, and scroll motifs---represents the height of 1750s and 1760s London fashion. This style of ornamentation is echoed in the carved decoration on the furniture John and Elizabeth Cadwalader commissioned in 1770-71 for their Second Street town house in Philadelphia.
