Frederick DeBourg Richards lived and worked in Philadelphia but traveled locally to capture the Pennsylvania countryside and the beaches of the New Jersey shore, as seen here. The cyanotype printing process he used involved combining two chemicals to produce photographic prints in ethereal shades of blue, which here echo the hues of the sea and sky. In this image, Richards emphasizes the vastness of the sea, its extent seemingly infinite and its scale immense.
