Necklace

19th century
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
This necklace is made of both round and trefoil gold beads, all designed to fit closely together, with a single four-leaf centerpiece. The shape of the beads reflects elements of the natural world, such as seeds, berries, and flowers. When worn by women, they are believed to carry potent associations with fertility. The undulating lines and carefully linked units might also suggest growth through repetition, as well as life and prosperity.
