Pat Meinzer, Cowboy, Benjamin, Texas

2009
Jane Hilton (British, born 1962)

Jane Hilton is a photographer from England who is fascinated by the American West. She is especially interested in the difference between the real stories of modern ranchers and the fantasy cowboy life shown in Hollywood movies. This picture is from a series that documents the cowboys’ homes and the cherished objects within them.

This photograph shows one cowboy in his bedroom. It might seem surprising to see a tough, denim-clad cowboy in a room with pink curtains, decorative pillows, a wedding picture, and wooden blocks spelling out “love” and “faith.” By photographing him in his bedroom, Hilton made a portrait of both the cowboy and the bond between him and the family member—probably his wife—with whom he shares a home.
