Side Chair

1865-1875
Attributed to Allen and Brother, Philadelphia (1835–1896)
This Renaissance Revival side chair represents the finest in design and execution of seating furniture by the Philadelphia cabinetmaking firm of Allen & Brother (active 1835-1902). The firm was known for their raised panel and ebonized decorations as well as exuberant carvings of popular motifs and fantastical animals. The elaborately shaped crest rail is particularly distinctive, and its shape and decoration is mimicked in the front rail.
