Torii Ippō (Japanese, 1930–2011)

Finely woven bamboo baskets and trays have been used in Japan to hold floral offerings at Buddhist altars from the eighth century onward. The practice of using bamboo baskets as tea ceremony flower containers is attributed to the famed tea master Sen no Rikyu (1521–1591). Basket flower containers were also commonly used in the steeped tea ceremony popular among Japanese literati.
