Woman's Ensemble: Top and Skirt

1971-1972
Designed by Stephen Burrows (American, born 1943) Made for Henri Bendel, New York (1895–present)
This joyously kaleidoscopic ensemble by Stephen Burrows reflects his unique color sense and belief that clothes, like toys, should be fun. Inspired by the dancing body, Burrows’s clothes are upbeat, easy-to-wear, and unconventional—no two of his garments are alike. One of the most inventive designers of the early 1970s, he was the first African American designer to achieve international acclaim.
