Daddy Grace Preaching

1938
James VanDerZee (American, 1886–1983)
Bishop Charles Manuel "Sweet Daddy" Grace (1881 or 1884-1960) founded the United House of Prayer for All People of the Church on the Rock of the Apostolic Faith in 1919. The church was focused around Daddy Grace's charismatic personality, and was often criticized for being outside the mainstream of Protestant Christianity. Grace's opulent style contributed to public skepticism, but in fact he quietly built a financial empire for the church (its real estate holdings included the El Dorado in New York City), which today helps support more than one hundred Houses of Worship.
