Stand-collared Nehru jackets, named after the former prime minister of India, were a sensation for a few years after 1966. The fad reflected a change in men's attitude and self-image, as well as their willingness to adopt styles formerly considered too extreme or effeminate: the really far-out man wore his Nehru jacket with a necklace. These jackets, along with turtleneck shirts, were prophesied to end men's slavery to neckties; instead, the Nehru itself was abruptly declared dead in late 1968.
