Throughout Los Caprichos Goya depicts a wide range of romantic exchanges between men and women. Several contemporary commentaries identify the amorous figures in this print as Queen Maria Luisa and her lover, Manuel Godoy, the prime minister of Spain. Their affair was widely discussed in Madrid at the time.
The scene could also represent courtship or a meeting between a prostitute and her client. Goya often left the exact nature of his imagery and titles ambiguous in order to avoid the attention of the Inquisition or the censure of his aristocratic clients.
