Small screens like this one were used on a scholar's desk to prevent ink from splashing while it was being prepared, which involved grinding an ink stick on an inkstone and then mixing the ground ink with water. The front of this small screen depicts two scholars engaging in conversation in a garden, while a Chinese poem adorns the reverse....
