Landscape prints were often designed to be published in sets. The serial nature of such groups of prints offered an extended journey for the viewer, who would examine each print in succession and move imaginatively through the multiple landscapes depicted.

This print is part of a set by Haarlem printmaker Jan van de Velde II, one of a five-part series of sixty landscapes, a variety of natural settings is presented. None of the scenes are identifiable, but many convincingly depict characteristically Dutch views: a rustic farm nestled in the low-lying landscape, city dwellers out for a stroll, or skaters frolicking on the ice.
