Woman's Coat

1963
Designed by Bill Blass (American, 1922–2002) Made for Maurice Rentner, Inc., New York (1923–1970) Sold by Tribout Shop, John Wanamaker, Philadelphia
Bill Blass was known for his elegant, easy-to-wear garments, especially his softly tailored day clothes cut from traditional masculine fabrics. Typical of the designer, this coat is both pared-down and interesting. The distinctive twill has long floats of thick, black-and- white yarn that give dimension and character. The simple cut is enhanced by two understated self-fabric elements: nonfunctional pocket flaps above the waist and a narrow, padded appliqué cut on the cross grain that frames the neckline and forms a front placket over concealed buttons.
