River Landscape with a Church

1553
Hans Lautensack (German, 1524–1566)
Pure landscape subjects without identifiable figures or narratives gained popularity around the same time that etching developed as a printmaking technique. Scenic views like this one with soaring pines, medieval river towns, and distant bluffs were more about using line to express qualities of atmosphere and elements of the natural world than about depicting specific places. Lautensack was among the leading German artists to etch landscapes with a sketch-like spontaneity during the early to mid-sixteenth century.
