After c. 1660
Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (called il Grechetto) (Italian, 1609–1664)
Castiglione, who followed a peripatetic track from Genoa to Rome, Naples, Mantua, Parma, and Venice during his career, is particularly known for this type of scene, in which Old Testament patriarchs are shown journeying with herds of animals. He repeated variants of this subject in paintings, drawings, etchings, and monotypes throughout his working life.
