This corbel, and others like it, ornamented the facade of a French Romanesque church. Placed high on a wall, corbels usually supported architectural cornices or arcades. Some facades of Romanesque churches were richly decorated with numerous religious sculptures. It is uncertain what meaning corbels like this one had within such programs, aside from providing visual delight and perhaps diversion from serious themes.
