Man's Jacket

c. 1950s
Made by Browning King & Co., New York City (1868-?)
On the label inside this jacket, the venerable firm Browning, King & Co. proudly reiterates their established slogan "Apparel for Gentlemen" but adds in larger letters "Styled in Hollywood." These two phrases reflect the dichotomy in mid-twentieth-century menswear between understated traditional styles and flashy new influences. The tailored jacket features wide lapels, patch pockets, and padded shoulders that taper to slim hips, but it is the striking zebra-patterned plush that makes this garment a screen-worthy star.
