Table

1876
Made by Gregory and Company, London (c. 1850–?)
This table comes from a bedroom suite originally purchased by George Peabody Wetmore (1846-1921) for Château-sur-Mer, his home in Newport, Rhode Island. Wetmore, who served as governor of Rhode Island and also as a United States senator, inherited the house from his father in 1862. During the 1870s, while Wetmore and his wife traveled throughout Europe, architect Richard Morris Hunt supervised the remodeling and redecorating of the house. It is now open to the public as a museum.
