Pitcher with Floral Reliefs

c. 1650
Artist/maker unknown, German
This is a characteristic example of a vessel used to decant wine into a glass, a practice that also reflects the standing of high-quality stonewares among the luxury objects used for refined dining in the period. Its decoration of repeated stylized bouquets against an intense cobalt blue ground became popular around the middle of the seventeenth century.
