Woman's Evening Coat

Spring/Summer 1987
Designed by Mary McFadden (American, born 1938)
Mary McFadden’s clothing, while consistently simple in shape, is informed by her deep interest in a range of ancient and exotic civilizations. This coat is from her “Chapungo” collection inspired by Africa, where she lived for a number of years in the 1960s. The dramatic print features bird forms derived from the funerary totems of the Sakalava-Vezo people of Madagascar. The columnar coat is given a supple body by McFadden’s signature narrow quilting.
