Woman at the Piano

1928-1929
Jacques Villon (Gaston Duchamp) (French, 1875–1963) After a painting by Marcel Gromaire (French, 1892–1971) Printed by Jean Joseph Crotti (French (born Switzerland), 1878–1958)
Between 1922 and 1930, for financial reasons, Villon made thirty-four "interpretive" prints after European paintings for the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in Paris. His earlier mastery of color aquatint made him the perfect artist to undertake such a project and the results show his technical expertise in reproducing the brushstrokes, color, and lighting of the paintings he followed. Villon's brother-in-law, Jean Crotti, was the printer for this project.
