The Grapplers

Designed c. 1862
Modeled by Jean Peter Molin (Swedish, 1814–1873) Made by Gustavsberg pottery, Gustavsberg, Sweden (1827–present)
This figure group was first exhibited at the International Exhibition held in London in 1862, where it was said to be "one of the most original groups in the Exhibition." The Museum's version, purchased by Hector Tyndale at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, is made of Parian porcelain, which was one of the most important nineteenth-century ceramic innovations. Parian was introduced at the Copeland factory in England around 1846. Because of its rather granular surface, which resembles marble, it was used extensively in the nineteenth century by European and American ceramic factories in the production of figures and portrait busts.
