The Virgin Mary Adoring the Sleeping Christ Child

1837-1838
Joseph Caspar (Swiss (active Germany), 1799–1880) After a drawing of c. 1836-1837 by Andreas Johann Jacob Heinrich Müller (German, 1811–1890) Copied after a painting of 1836 by Ernst Deger (German, 1809–1885) Published by the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westphalen zu Düsseldorf (founded 1829) Printed by C. Schulgen-Bettendorff, Kupferdruckerei der Königlichen Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf (active 19th century)
Ernst Deger made his reputation in the 1830s with small paintings of the Madonna and Child that were made widely available to collectors in the form of prints by leading engravers, such as Joseph Caspar. This is one such print by Caspar based on one of Deger’s paintings. That painting had, in turn, likely been inspired by another of Caspar’s prints--a reproduction of a painting of Saint Catherine dated 1500 that in Deger’s and Caspar’s time was thought to be by Raphael.
