The White Cow

1622
Jan van de Velde II (Dutch, c. 1593–1641) With figures copied from a drawing by Willem Pietersz. Buytewech (Dutch, 1591/92–1624)

While the dawn landscape is Jan van de Velde's own invention, he copied the group of peasants and animals on their way to market directly from a drawing by Willem Buytewech.

This engraving's title is an example of the penchant in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of collectors to assign distinguishing nicknames to favorite prints.
