Untitled (Horse and Skyscraper)

c. 1930-1932
Thurman Rotan (American, 1903–1991)
If the skyscraper is the icon of modernity, then the horse embodies the spirit of America's West. Uniting these two symbols, this photograph of San Antonio, Texas, suggests both a continuity of progress and an irreversible break from tradition. The Alamo National Bank Building, at left, and Tower Life Building, at center, were both completed in 1929.
