Versailles

1923-1924
Eugène Atget (French, 1857–1927)
Julien Levy collected numerous Atget photographs depicting sculptures of satyrs, fauns, Bacchus figures, and other devilish or handsome types. Like Atget's photographs of prostitutes, which Levy also collected, these records hum with an undercurrent of sexual energy, so important to the Surrealists. No doubt Levy also liked them because he fancied himself a great ladies' man.
