Manuscript of the Devimahatmya (Story of the Great Goddess)

1603
Artist/maker unknown, Nepalese
The Devimahatmya is a collection of hymns glorifying the Great Goddess that culminates in the episode of Durga vanquishing the buffalo demon. As a physical embodiment of Durga, a manuscript of the Devimahatmya may itself be worshiped as a sacred object. Devotees often read this text aloud, particularly during festivals such as Dashain, and its recitation is believed to invoke the goddess’s presence. This copy is written on palm leaves sandwiched between wooden covers whose interior illustrations show both battles with demons and Durga peacefully granting boons to her devotees.
