Seahorses by Sam Gilliam

April 26–May 25, 1975

Creating excitement during the Philadelphia Festival, a project of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, was Seahorses, a dramatic draped fabric environment by artist Sam Gilliam. Adorning the two exterior walls of the Museum's East Façade, Seahorses evolved from the artist's inspiration that the large bronze rings circling the Museum building were, in Greek mythology, used to tie seahorses to Neptune's temple.
