Contemporary Art on Paper

February 9–April 22, 2007

Selected from one of the liveliest sectors of the Museum's collection of works of art on paper, this exhibition presents mostly large, contemporary art from the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. Many of these objects have only been seen recently by visitors to the department's study room and several have never before been shown in the galleries.

Featuring about fifty works by artists from North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, the selection includes prints by Edward Ruscha, Sarah Sze, Not Vital, and Kara Walker; drawings by Heide Fasnacht, Anish Kapoor, and Laurie Reid; and photographs by Peter Campus, Eileen Neff, Javier Vallhonrat, and Zhang Huan.

These works of art are on view as Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs relocates its collection, study room, offices, and work rooms to spacious new quarters in the Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building.

About the Collection

The Museum's collection of contemporary art on paper has been growing actively since 1979, when the Philadelphia-based art supply company the Hunt Manufacturing Co. (later the Hunt Corporation) began to fund a series of grants for the Museum to purchase "cutting edge" works of art on paper, which were shown at the Museum in two successive exhibitions in 1988 and 1996.

Since the Hunt grant program was discontinued in 2001, purchases and gifts of contemporary art on paper have not abated, thanks to the generosity of individual donors.
