Hands-On Activities

Art Classes for Ages 9–10

Museum teachers guide children through fun and informative experiences in the galleries followed by hands-on projects in the Education Classrooms.

Classes meet weekly on Saturdays, February 22–April 26*. There are two sessions to choose from:

Morning: 10:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Afternoon: 1:00 p.m.–2:30 p.m.

Things to Know

*No classes on Saturday, April 19
Pre-registration is required.
All children must be toilet trained.
Fees are nonrefundable unless the museum cancels the class.
Tuition assistance available upon request.

Drawn with Spirit: Pennsylvania German Fraktur from the Joan and Victor Johnson Collection

This exhibition celebrates a recent promised gift of fraktur to the Museum from art collectors Joan and Victor Johnson. One of the most admired forms of American folk art, fraktur are decorated documents featuring brilliant colors and often whimsical imagery. Transplanted to Pennsylvania by German-speaking immigrants in the 1700s, these hand-drawn or printed works on paper are distinguished by a broken (or "fractured") style of lettering. Small yet exuberant, fraktur celebrated important moments in the personal and domestic lives of Pennsylvania Germans.
