Elephant with Rider Holding a Cannon

Late 17th century
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
Elephants were a major military force in India well into the nineteenth century. Sitting in an upright, martial posture, the rider steadies a cannon with his left hand, the barrel propped on the elephant's neck. His right hand grasps a curved elephant goad, an implement that could communicate more than one hundred different commands to these intelligent animals.
