Textile Fragment

Early 16th century
Artist/maker unknown, Turkish
The clusters of discs that populate this luxurious textile fragment are today often referred to as chintamani, a Sanskrit word that, in the Buddhist and Hindu traditions, refers to an auspicious, wish-fulfilling jewel. However, the use of the chintamani motif at the court of the Ottoman sultans drew from Turco-Iranian, rather than Buddhist or Hindu, artistic traditions.
