Saint Thomas Touching Christ's Wounds

Doubting that Christ was truly resurrected from the dead, Thomas had to touch Christ's wound to be convinced of his presence. The seemingly mistaken location of the wound on Christ's left side indicates that this oil sketch was conceived as a design for an engraving; the image would have been reversed when printed. Quellinus frequently collaborated with Peter Paul Rubens, and was named town painter of Antwerp shortly after Rubens's death in 1640.
