Part 1: Meet the conservator, Mark Tucker, The Aronson Senior Conservator of Paintings and Vice Chair of Conservation, inside the conservation lab to learn about the milestone conservation treatment he performed on a work regarded as the most important American painting of the nineteenth century.

Part 2: See how it all comes together as you sit in the gallery itself and unlock the puzzles of The Gross Clinic and the diverse selection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative art objects that were chosen to surround it. The Museum looks forward to introducing you to our newly appointed Assistant Director for Interpretation, Josh Helmer, who is sure to share insights on the collection that you thought you knew so well as he leads a private gallery discussion about the reinstallation.

Mary Dorra will discuss her historical novel, bringing to life Chicago’s 1893 Columbian Exposition, where her grandmother, Mary Lawrence, an assistant to Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was the only woman allowed to exhibit a sculpture outside the Women’s Pavilion. Her historical novel reveals a portrait of the era and its Beaux Arts American artists. There will be a book signing after the talk.
