Art Splash is back! Visit the Perelman Building this summer and enjoy Philadelphia’s place for creative play. From July 1 to Labor Day, families can discover Creative Africa through daily gallery explorations, studio art creations, interactive activities, and other imaginative programs. Museum admission for kids twelve and under is always free.

Art Splash is presented by PNC Arts Alive. Play Every Day



Splash Studio (10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.)
Let your creativity soar at the Splash Studio, a destination where people of all ages can drop in and create art together. Come throughout the summer to enjoy new art projects inspired by Creative Africa.


Family Tours (11:00 a.m. & 3:00 p.m.)
Early Birds (ages 3–5) and Art Explorers (ages 6–10)
Creative play and participatory conversation make these tours the perfect introduction to art for young visitors and their families.


Family Art Cart (Noon–3:00 p.m.)
Museum educators are out and about in the galleries with stories to tell and hands-on activities for everyone. Drop in and watch Creative Africa come to life.

Plan Your Family’s Art Splash Visit
A free shuttle between the main building’s West Entrance and the Perelman Building will be available. Departing every 15 minutes, it has a lift for easy stroller transport. Stroller parking will be available inside the Perelman Building during Art Splash. The Gallery Café at the Perelman Building will offer family-friendly dining options 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Tuesday–Sunday.

Celebrate Africa

Move, clap, and dance to the beats of Kulu Mele African Dance & Drum Ensemble. For over 40 years, Kulu Mele has captivated audiences with traditional dance and music from West Africa and the African diaspora. Celebrate Art Splash and Creative Africa with two energetic performances.

Baby Bird Playdate

Best for grownups with babies

Gallery tours for parents and caregivers with babes in tow. If the baby fusses don’t fret—you’ll be in good company.

Family Workshop
Location: Perelman Building
Kids ages 6-12 with an adult
Reservations required
$20 per person ($16 per member) for each class after Museum admission.
Both kids and grown-ups must register. Space is limited. Tuition is nonrefundable.

Roll up your sleeves and enjoy creative time as a family. Workshops include gallery conversations followed by collaborative art-making in the studios. Each class is offered twice and explores a wide variety of media.

        Be a designer! Make your own bag inspired by the exhibition Vlisco: African Fashion on a Global Stage. Mix and match patterns, including real Vlisco fabrics, as you try out a sewing machine and learn hand-sewing skills. No experience required.

          Build a three-dimensional structure from all kinds of materials inspired by the exhibition The Architecture of Francis Kéré: Building for Community. Then, turn your creation into a sound speaker! Hook it up to a smartphone and other devices to play music through your structure and find out what other sounds it can make.

            Print with sunlight to create your own photos –without the use of a camera! Get inspired by Three Photographers/Six Cities and other Creative Africa exhibitions as you experiment with light sensitive materials.

Enjoy the music of the Liberian Women’s Chorus for Change, a group of award-winning singers, dancers, and musicians from Liberia who now live in Philadelphia. Listen to the stories in their songs that promote change and social justice through art.

Group Visits
During July and August, Art Splash and Creative Africa are not able to accommodate large group visits due to space constraints. To book a group visit to Creative Africa in the fall, please call 215-684-7863. Camp groups are welcome to visit the Museum’s main building this summer with advance registration.
