"In arranging my new apartment I see your paintings again with so much pleasure.... There's such a note of truth, of real countryside in each one."
Letter to van Gogh from his brother Theo, Paris, March 16, 1889
"I've looked most attentively at your works since we parted; first at your brother's and then at the Independents exhibition. I offer you my sincere compliments, and for many artists you are the most remarkable in the exhibition. With things from nature you are the only one there who thinks."
Letter to van Gogh from artist Paul Gauguin, Paris, March 20, 1890

I thought that the still-life with the pale blue rippled "tablecloth" was really if the grapes and leaves had been set out in a shallow bird bath. Wonderful exhibit...makes me want to get out the paints!

We loved the exhibition - such joy and yet sadness and turmoil. Our favorites were 'Undergrowth' and 'Almond Blossom'.

The poor tormented artist! If he could only know what the world thinks of him now.

Van Gogh’s close up of two sunflower heads is just astonishing.  When you look at the way he painted it; loose thick brushstrokes for the stems and outer petals contrasting with the most intricate webbing of yellows and oranges and finally, the thinnest threads of russet to describe the seed heads.  Just amazing.

The paintings are so beautiful and moving.  The close up of sunflowers brought tears to my eyes.
