Sister Geneva

c. 1980
Ellen Powell Tiberino (American, 1937–1992)
Sister Geneva Lassiter, the artist's cousin, served for eighteen years as a missionary to Tanzania. Tiberino captures her powerful personality by modeling her face and hands in great detail with short pencil strokes, and animates her voluminous robe and billowing habit with softer, lighter lines. A graduate from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Tiberino lived in Philadelphia throughout her adult life. Like Beauford Delaney, she had a distinct interest in portraiture.
