Vase

1886-1887
Made by Gillinder and Sons, Philadelphia (1861–1930)
The decoration on this vase was made by drawing the design on the white outer layer with an acid-resistant mixture. The object was then given an acid bath, which left only the designed areas intact (as white glass) and elsewhere revealed the blue layer of glass underneath. The white areas were then carved to achieve the delicate decoration seen here.
