Printed Textile: "Space Age"

Designed 1982
Designed by Masakazu Kobayashi (Japanese, 1944–2004) Made by Sangetsu Company, Kyoto, Japan
This lively printed fabric, one of two designed by Masakazu Kobayashi for Sangetsu under the title Space Age, was intended to represent a path through a harvested rice field in the fall. Although the pattern of small short strokes divided by thin colored stripes suggests the traditional textile designs called komon, the vibration of the white strokes with their brightly colored and feathered edges against the black ground relates to modernist painting.
