Classical Scene with a Fallen Figure and a Crowd

c. 1820-1822
Francesco Sabatelli (Italian, 1803–1829)
Son of the better-known Florentine painter Luigi Sabatelli, Francesco obtained a pension to study in Rome at age seventeen and received a few commissions for work in churches and palaces-including a prestigious one for the Palazzo Pitti in Florence-before his death at age twenty-six in Milan from tuberculosis, the new scourge of nineteenth-century Europe. The subject of this dramatic scene is not known.
