Souvenir Painting of Krishna in the Love God's Chariot (Kandarpa Ratha)

c. 1940
Artist/maker unknown, Indian
The round format of this painting fits perfectly with its subject-Krishna playing his flute while dancing with the gopis (cowherd women). Here the bodies of seven nearly nude gopis intertwine around the god to take the shape of a chariot. The top four women each carry a fly whisk, an ancient symbol of a royal-or divine-attendant.
