c. 1789
Artist/maker unknown, American or Continental
The decorative ironwork and painted patterns on this box are a type of European ornament that eighteenth-century American craftsmen adapted for their wares. The lettering seen on this example can also be found on furniture made by Pennsylvania craftsmen working within Swiss and Scandinavian traditions.
