Cigar Box

1939
Albert Eugene Gallatin (American, 1881–1952)
Paying homage to Pablo Picasso, Gallatin created a monochrome version of the top portion of the Spanish artist’s Three Musicians of 1921 on the cover of this cigar box, and painted his own colorful abstract composition in the interior. The artist/collector had purchased Picasso’s Synthetic Cubist masterpiece for his Museum of Living Art in 1936, securing funds just in time to beat out Alfred Barr of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
