Memorial Charm

c. 1871
Artist/maker unknown, American
Memorial charms were given as tokens of mourning, often made from the hair of a departed loved one. Sometimes the hair was fashioned into elaborate jewelry, such as earrings or bracelets. This charm commemorates Major William B. Hubbs, a painter from Germantown who died in the service of the 95th Pennsylvania Infantry in 1862.
