In Vishakhapatnam, a city on the eastern coast of India, ivory and ivory-inlay furniture was being manufactured under European patronage from at least the early eighteenth century. The distinctive decoration produced there was achieved by engraving a pattern in the ivory that was then highlighted with black lacquer.
