Hendrik Goudt (Dutch, 1585–1630) After a painting by Adam Elsheimer (German, 1578–1610)

During the early seventeenth century, the direct investigation of natural phenomena and an interest in optics began to be reflected in artwork with the use of light and dark to specify a particular time of day. With their dramatic light sources, Goudt's engravings after Elsheimer's paintings influenced generations of Dutch and Flemish printmakers wishing to capture similar chiaroscuro effects in their landscape prints.
