Banditti Taking His Post

1778
John Hamilton Mortimer (English, 1740–1779) Published by John Hamilton Mortimer (English, 1740–1779)
Known as "the English Salvator," Mortimer became so fascinated by the Italian artist Salvator Rosa that he imitated both the master's art and his reputed character. By the eighteenth century, legends had spread concerning Rosa's reckless personality and rough life, and Mortimer favored "Salvator Rosa--like" subjects such as this one, which features bandits in the wilderness.
